13. The Limitations of the Unlimited

I confess I hate limitations. I hate to be told that I can’t. And yet, I have to accept that we are shackled by Limitation even in our affluent, prosperous society, where those limitations are generally self-inflicted through our own excessive desires and expectations.
I fall painfully into this last category. My unlimited mind, a mind like yours or anyone’s, can imagine worlds, situations and possibilities that are beyond my physical capabilities and the limitations of time… I was going to call it my worst enemy, but I think I better befriend it!
At 8.00 am, a day extends ahead of me with a promise of a million small and large projects that I am sure I will be able complete:
• Today, I’ll edit my book for 6 hours: around 4000 words at the current speed, if no more scenes and dialogues decide to sprout on the way! (14 years on the go! I don’t dare to plan anymore a publication date! It is an embarrassment, but being my first novel, it has to be the best I can achieve at this stage.)
• Today, I will do 2 hours of piano practice: I will finally master that little Scarlatti sonata (at it, on and off for 10 years). I might even improve the Mozart sonata (2 years on the go.)
• Today, I’ll write my blog and I will do it in 20 minutes instead of the usual 2 hours.
• Today I will finish at least my sewing project No 7 (at least 6 more on the go, all unfinished; all piling up in my basket.)
• Today, I will give the kitchen a proper clean.
• Today, I’ll go out for a two hours walk…
• Today I will watch that David Attenborough’s Documentary.
• Today I will do a bit of gardening… after all, it is sunny…
However:
• Today, after 20 minutes at the piano I have to stop to do yoga because my back aches. My fault as I did too much writing and sewing yesterday. For once, the three 10 to 20 minutes yoga sessions, and the 3 hours cleaning, baking and stewing the last of the autumn apples, weren’t enough to compensate for the stillness. (Arthritis is being wo-man-handled, but not yet defeated. Flares up if I sit or don’t move for more than a couple of hours.)
• Today, I sit to write this blog, planning to continue editing… but my carpal tunnel syndrome is making its appearance again, numbing my right thumb and making it difficult to write…
What shall I do?
• I shall be gracious, and not complain about having an active mind;
• I shall be grateful for my health being as good as it is. After all, I rather have problems sitting too long instead of not being able to move.
• I will re-read/check extracts of my novel and I’ll use my thumb as little as possible.
• I will do some gardening… hands and back permitting.
• I will go for a walk indeed, and enjoy this beautiful sunshine.
I might be exercised enough later on, to afford some writing, sewing and playing the piano!
Tomorrow at 8 am, the day will seem limitless… again…
If anyone out there would like to be my Executive Secretary/Editor/Personal Assistant, let me know. I am considering winning a lottery or becoming a Best Selling author in order to pay one! Of course I need to finish the book first, don’t I?

My blog today, is a bit longer than usual. It is an article that was published in the Banbury Magazine in 2007 and that I consider very relevant to these series. It also relates to an idea I brushed upon last week: Are we making a living? Making a dying? Or much better in my view, is our life in the making, as all of our lives are until the last second of our existence?

It is also a true story. Only a few details have been altered, simply because I didn’t remember them exactly. I hope you enjoy it.

Making a Living or a Life in the Making?

 

It was April, spring, bright and hopeful. So was my dancing partner.

We were jumping to the manic rhythms of a fast Milonga – one of the many derivations, declinations and inclinations of Tango.

My dancing partner’s spirited feet didn’t quite match his white hair or his many wrinkles, but they matched, indeed, the glint in his sparkling blue eyes and the joyful mood he was in, despite being a beginner as he confessed.

As the workshop ended and we stopped to have tea, my husband and I happened to sit opposite my cheerful dancing partner, and another white haired fellow attending the same weekend of workshops.

After a couple of minutes, it was pretty obvious to us that there were a striking number of similarities and differences between the two older men: they were both white haired, blue eyed, rather handsome, slender, with good posture, and they both looked healthy.

However, my dancing partner looked as fresh as a fifteen year old on his first outings, all the world opened in front of him with so many attractive ladies offering themselves to dance with him like flowers on verandas. Actually there was an enormous difference between him and most fifteen year olds I know: he was genuinely full of life and happiness but more than anything he was full of that unselfconscious confidence that only age’s wisdom and a healthy ‘couldn’t care less about what other people think’ attitude brings sometimes to the deserving ones.

The other gentleman, once one got over the funereal wistfulness that pervaded all his countenance, was physically just as attractive as the first one, with a still supple body, and poise and elegance not born out of his own social background, but of a lifetime of good health and particularly, of good posture.

Dying to find out how they could be so similar and so different, I started with the obvious: their professions: they both had retired the year before. The coincidence created an interesting dialogue between the two men that kept my husband and me, fascinated during the course of the meal.

Both had worked from nine to five, for forty years of their lives.

The cheerful man had retired with a small pension. He had to top it up fixing computers and doing all sorts of odd jobs, in order to survive and to be able to do all the leisure activities he was interested in.

The sad man had enough income to do, pretty much, whatever he wanted.

For the cheerful man, in his own words, ‘life’ had ‘started when he retired’. He had found himself still full of energy, healthy enough to enjoy all the leisure and pleasure, and with enough time in his hands to develop his personal interests, which his work and family had prevented him from pursuing before. He was attending Spanish evening classes, he was teaching himself Geography and he had started a map collection. He was a very keen reader and, he was learning to dance Tango and Salsa. Days for him didn’t have enough hours to fit the innumerable things that attracted his attention. His only small regret was that he wished he had retired with a better pension, so he wouldn’t have to worry about making extra money to pay for the extra activities.

Our sad man felt, in his own words that ‘life’ had ‘ended when he stopped working’. He couldn’t work out what to do with his time. He had plenty of money to travel or to do nearly anything he wanted, but he couldn’t face doing any of it alone. The same as our cheerful man, he was divorced and lived on his own. He wasn’t very interested in reading. He had never had any hobbies, and he couldn’t even consider that he could start having one this late in life. He was –he sadly confessed- only waiting to die! He had been convinced by a friend to start Tango the year before, but he felt, being this old, he could never learn!

I found the experience very interesting and it made me realize that:

  •  Our perception of events is what dictates the choices we make.
  •  Retiring from making a living can sometimes mean the real start of making our own life as we would like it to be.
  • It is never too late to learn, to love, to enjoy and, let alone, to be happy.

Many examples come to mind; not least the recent best-selling writer who got his first novel published age 91! Or my old friend, Phillip, joyfully getting the best grades in his English Literature degree, age 67, well ahead of his fellow students, who were a few decades younger than him.

What are your own thoughts about retirement? Will it mean the start of a new life, a new career, new relationships, new hopes and prospects? I do hope so.

Sour Grapes and Generous Wine

 

 

I expect nobody needs a definition in order to understand what a sour grape tastes like. It is important to remember though that sour grapes can look just as tempting as sweet ones.

This is the online dictionary definition for:

Generous Wine: Having a rich bouquet and flavour.

As we all know, in order to acquire that rich bouquet and flavour, you need to be old in wine terms! But you also need to have grown in sweetness and depth.

Personally, I would like to grow old like a Generous Wine: ever up in virtue. As I have mentioned in former blogs, Faith, Hope and Love: in ourselves, and for ourselves; in others, and for others, are deep truths to live by. Today I would like to add other virtues, coming also from my Catholic upbringing that I consider would help me to become a more Generous Wine:

Prudence or Cautiousness, which simply keeps us from harm. I could have done with a bit more of it many times in my life, particularly in my youth!

Justice: How can we live with ourselves if we don’t, at least, attempt to be just and fair with ourselves and others?

Fortitude or strength: Well… we know life is a bit tough; therefore we need a degree of toughness to put up a fight for what we love and what we believe in.

Temperance or moderation, which keeps us from excess, not only in drinking and eating, but also, in respectable areas such as work and exercise. Remember, you are supposed to be working to make a living, rather than working to make a dying!

To those 4 Cardinal virtues, I would like to add Modesty, which keeps our relationships with others oiled and in running order.

This week, this blog is late again because I was visiting my partner’s mother; she won’t read this; yet, I want to raise my cup of tea to a woman who is like “generous wine”: growing older, ever cheerful, ever kind, and ever up, in spite of hardship and difficulties. I also want to raise my cup of tea, to my lovely friend Nancy, whom you will meet soon in this blog, for keeping growing sweeter, wiser, more beautiful and graceful every day.

Let’s keep growing up; let’s keep growing sweeter, more generous and kinder, more loving, more canning! (not cunning).

I just created a new word:

Canning: Willing, therefore able.

Have a “Generous Wine” week. You don’t need to drink it, but of course you can if you like (in moderation!). Most importantly, BE THAT GENEROUS WINE.

Will’s Muscles

 

 

Like all healthy babies of the animal kingdom, Will was born with a good set of muscles to complement his bone structure. Indeed, he grabbed the finger of the Doctor with great gusto and screamed his lungs out in the first few seconds of his life. He held his little head quite upright before the third month of his life.

As a young child, Will was active, bubbly, and full of life and muscle.

School happened; bullying happened; the comfort of home, TV, computer games happened; the care of parents who mistook loving and protecting with letting the will of their Will dominate their lives, happened.

Will started to spend more and more hours sitting down in front of a screen than running around. His sleep patterns became erratic, his diet, higher and higher in carbohydrates.

By the age of 15, Will was obese, his muscles were wasting away rapidly, he was at risk of developing diabetes, and he was suffering from depression.

Doctors, exams, psychologists, clinics happened; pills were taken; more TV and games were watched and played; more comfort eating happened. After all, he was a sweet tooth, and mother loved him.

Will was by now, a slumped mass lying on a bed all the time, too weak, sleepless, and depressed to move.  His bones and joints had become too weak to support his large body. His eating habits, added to drugs and inactivity had taken their toll.

An elderly wise Doctor was called as a last resource. He examined Will carefully with serious countenance.

“Am I going to die, Doctor?” panted Will with effort, watching anxiously his own laboured breathing, and the doctor’s stern face as he packed the stethoscope in its case. 

“Well… depends…” answered the Doctor.

“On what?”

 “On you, Will.”

“On me? What can I do?”

“You can give a step or two today, and a few more tomorrow?”

“What do you mean? I can’t move!”

“Can’t you, really?” Said the Doctor cryptically and left the room swiftly, leaving an indignant boy, half sitting on the bed.

Will’s mother was downstairs waiting with bated breath for the old practitioner’s diagnosis.

The Doctor looked at her with concern in his face. “It all depends on him exercising his muscles, but particularly HIS WILL’S MUSCLES.” He emphasized.

“But he can’t! He can’t move!” the woman sobbed.

“He could, if he has the will.”

“He is too weak!”

“If you really want to help him, put the remote control out of reach, but visible from his bed, every time he puts it in his bed. In a few days, move TV and computers out of his room. Then, move them downstairs. Change his diet to a highly nutritional, low calorie one.”

“He will hate me for it. He’s already very depressed. He will REALLY suffer.”

The old Doctor stared sternly at her from behind his glasses for a few seconds: “Either, you and Will develop your will muscles, or Will, will die.”

 

There is a healthy boy in my neighbourhood who, one grey day, not long ago, got up from his bed reached out for a TV  control, and regained control of his life.

Fate, Fortune and Will

Some people are fortunate enough to appear to have it all: health, a roof over their heads, enough food, warmth, clothing, love and security, opportunities for learning, work, creating, enjoying life. However, all too often, they are unfortunate enough not to recognize it.

If you are reading this, it means you, like me, have been spared from the distressing and even tragic consequences of the latest storms. Perhaps, like me, you are reflecting on your good fortune.

After having planned this week’s post, one of my dearest friends asked me, pretty much what the protagonist of one of my books always asks himself:

“Is our destiny determined by genes, birth, upbringing, past choices?

Or can we determine the course of our existence?”*

My answers, based on my personal experience and my observations of life and people, are:

  • 50%, Genes, birth, family, education and upbringing:
  • 50%, What we decide to make of our 50% lottery.

In my personal experience, we can change even our health, and overcome many other seemingly impossible challenges, quite dramatically. We can change, of course, the effects of education and upbringing. We can transform ourselves, our lives, our health and our level of happiness.

In my view, it is the power of our will what can take us all the way, from simple wish to the intention; from the intention, to the attention and focus necessary to work our wish into the desired result. Perhaps you will care to have a look at my nephew Juan Acosta’s project,  http://ThoughtsintoResults.com (By the way, Juan has grown up in USA, and I have had no influence whatsoever in his upbringing. However, obviously we are into similar missions!)

But, how do you train your will to will what you need to will in order to transform your life?

My suggestion for this week is to observe, and if necessary to change your attitude to your life and your circumstances. Essentially, I suggest that you strive to see your glass, not even half full but full to the brim with the unabashed and pretty permanent joy of being alive; of having learnt what you have learnt; of experiencing the love you experience for and from people, places, objects, whatever form love takes in your life.

Will, have Faith in yourself; work at it and/or open space for it. Remember:

“Never give up hope and good luck will find you”

Love, the Intelligent Instinct

 

 

Of course from Faith and Hope we move into the last of the three Cardinal Virtues: Charity or Love.

At the risk of being controversial, I have big problems with the concept of charity and with the current semantics of the word love.

Charity seems to me overrated. We seem to need someone’s suffering in order to experience compassion. Unfortunately, I find there is a sort of selfish cathartic release associated to experiencing compassion, at least in my case. It is beautiful… but, the reason for compassion seems still questionable. Besides, charity is often a way to patronize or to clear our conscience.

Regarding the word love… it is difficult to associate the highest sort of unconditional love, or even romantic, sexual or filial love with love for Ice Cream, as delightful as Ice Cream is.

Another question is that love can be considered by the sceptics, simply as a more elevated word to designate the primeval instincts of self-preservation, procreation and protection to ensure the survival of our species… If that is all what love is, it is an Intelligent Instinct!

Whatever love is, I consider the ability of experiencing love or compassion or both, a very fortunate skill and one I am always grateful for.

I am very lucky that I experience pretty constantly love for and from people and things. Yes, I even believe that what other people call inanimate objects are animated and do love me… if only because they reflect the love/attention/intention/dream of their creator, but also the love I give them. And this, to some people perhaps stupid belief, is a useful belief for me and doesn’t seem to cause any harm to anyone. On the contrary, it has the very practical use of helping me to save money as I don’t tend to waste or to throw away anything that still seems to have life in it. It helps me to have fewer problems with machines and mechanical objects as I treat them with care. And, of course, unless I fall prey of my innate tactlessness, it also helps me to preserve jobs and relationships. It has taken me nearly a lifetime to learn to love this way. But I can assure you it is very useful and very enjoyable.

So my recipe for today is love… everything; yourself; other people; your life; your car; your job; your lack of it; your money; the lack of it (how can money love you if you don’t love it? Don’t confuse with avarice!); rain and English weather; holidays and sunshine, including the often shy English one. Love, love, love…..

Self Belief: The Hardest Creed

 

Many people are happy to believe in God, in their Doctor, in the Government, in the Social System, in their Rights as Citizens, in Charitable acts, in their families, in the remedies they take, in the sky, the stars, the sun, the rain, the soil, being there all the time for them.

The reality is that the only thing we probably can believe in is ourselves. We can turn into sophistic logic of some description and even try to deny that. But that is difficult. Because we believe we know we are here; we experience hunger, cold, pleasure, pain. Paraphrasing Decartes’ “Cogito Ergo Sum”, we think, therefore we exist.

Yet, when it comes to the value of our existence, our purpose, our direction in life, even our wishes and desires, it is incredible how often we doubt. And we doubt to the point of not caring about our bodies and minds; we doubt to the point in which we discard and refuse to search for or acknowledge our purpose, our direction in life. How often this essential doubt leads us to squander our health; our ability to be happy; our time; our money.

I keep thinking of creating more of an order to these posts… but perhaps at the moment I value much the spontaneity of having thought I should continue with one of the 3 pillars of physical health, and yet in the last minute deciding, I wanted to speak about the cardinal Virtue of Faith in ourselves.

3. Mind… the Gaps in your Awareness

Many people are aware about the condition of their minds and bodies. Sadly, many of us pay more attention to the state of our car, our furniture or our house than to ourselves. We tend to numb our senses and subject ourselves to excess or deprivation in ways that in my view, if we were in our right ‘mind’ we would never consider.

If at all times we were aware, ‘Mindful’ of our real needs (I’ll talk about the mind and emotions in another post):

Would we eat or drink in excess?

Would we put inside our bodies harmful substances, food and drink that are not good for us, or smoke?

Of course, the question is, unless the cause is genetic – and I’ll come back to that at some stage- would we suffer from indigestion, obesity, diabetes, and perhaps allergies, which in my view might be caused by saturation of the body with a particular food or substance?

Would we deprive our lungs from that most essential fuel, Air? We tend to breathe so carelessly, that most of the time our lungs are 3/4 full with poisonous Carbon Dioxide. As with food, we tend to take in more than we can expel! Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypercapnia

Would we deprive our bodies of movement if we realized in our bones that a sedentary life can kill us? Everybody knows that it leads to heart disease, arthritis, with the consequent body parts replacement if they are replaceable, and that it is also one of the biggest contributory factors in depression, lack of energy, poor sleep, obesity, etc, etc.

I suggest for this week, that you treat your body as you would treat your car:

Check the alignment = Posture

Check the quality of the fuel and oil you put in it = Air, food and drink.

Keep turning the engine on to make sure the battery keeps charged.

You could also chose to go to a mindfulness class near you.

I have personally attended Hugh Poulton’s  www.yogaunlimited.co.uk Ashtanga Yoga and Mindfulness classes and I just think he is very excellent.

2. The Three Pillars of Good Health

They are in my view, Faith, Hope and Charity… just joking for now but we will actually come back to those in due course. If you are at all curious about my approach to religion and spirituality, please continue reading till the end of the post.

Last post was about The Posture of the Soul and the Tree of Life. But for the time being, in order for this blog to be a practical guide, and not too esoteric, let’s move into the physical aspects although as I warned you in my first post, physical/spiritual/emotional will be all jumbled up in these pages.

The Three Pillars of Physical Health

1. Posture

1. Posture.

I consider that posture is a sort of coded message. In the majority of people, it reflects their general state of health, their energy levels, the way they feel about themselves and the way they relate to the outside world.  In turn, it is the most immediate aspect of our physique that other people perceive, even if that is often done in a totally unconscious way.

I suggest a little task, which is for you to reflect on the following questions.

1. What does my posture feel like?

2. How does my posture make me feel about myself?

3. What does the image on the mirror tell me about my posture?

4. How does my posture make me feel in relationship to the outside world?

5. What do I think is the message I am giving to others with my posture?

Religion and Spirituality: my view as a sceptical believer

I describe myself as a sceptical believer: I doubt everything and I believe everything is possibly.

I don’t follow any organized religion or specific spiritual movement, because in a way, I follow them all.

Just to clarify my position, whereas I find in all religious and spiritual organizations/movements, very important and essential ethical principles and directions for life that are useful, beautiful, and that should ring true to any member of humanity, I find also that too many wrong and unethical deeds have been and are constantly performed in the name of religion. I often find that ritual replaces feeling; rules and duties, replace natural, humane spontaneous behaviours, often jeopardizing spiritual growth and true compassion for oneself and for all the creatures in the Universe.

I find that organized religion has often been at odds with progress, with curiosity, with our rights to create, re-create and make of our world a better world for the present and the future.

Therefore I am happy to follow any aspect/rule/claim of any religion or movement, that increases my sense of well being and happiness, my awareness and correction of my behaviour and the constant striving for compassion, humanity, solidarity,

How to Grow Old the Right Way Up

I was born with a heart murmur, double hernias, a weak liver and no prospects for a long or healthy life. My childhood and young years were plagued by chronic anaemia, fevers, sickness, pains, parasites, rickets and visits to doctors and hospitals, operations, injections and a pretty constant feeling of unwell-being.
However I will be celebrating my 61st birthday in less than a month and I feel, and I am sure I am, far healthier than throughout most of the last 60 years.
To celebrate, I want to share with whoever is interested my own brand of tips on “How to grow old the right way up“. i hope they help.

The Posture of the Soul and the Tree of Life

Mind/Spirit/Emotions/Body

How to separate them? I think with my mind. I might feel  or recognize a feeling by its physical expression through some part of my body. A thought, a feeling, an emotion, might make my heart beat faster or slower, or my solar plexus contract or expand. However I can only recognize and label it, as thought, or feeling, purely intellectual, highly spiritual or basic, physical/ animal, through the description my mind cares to make of it, based on its experiences, culture and intellectual development.
So I will have to jumble them all up… we will see what happens.
Let’s start with posture:

The Posture of the Soul
The posture of the soul, I would suggest it to be erect; not looking too much up, or too much down. Just level, forwards, regarding the world and all fellow beings as equals. Equals as the leaves of a tree are equal in their contribution to the life of the tree, between themselves, and in comparison to the roots. Are the roots that take nourishment from the soil any less than the leaves that suck nourishment from the sun and the air?  or the trunk that protects and counts its years, any less than the seeds that will reproduce its life? We are all equal and all of us contribute in equal measure to the beauty, the health and the present and future of the tree of life. Let’s be erect, upright, sincere in intention, alert in attention. Let’s allow the “gravity of goodness ” the attraction of the bright and the beautiful, exert unhindered its influence, so we can keep “growing old, the right way up.”
